Chapter 1 – Signs of the End (Part 2)
In Part 1, we explored the first five signs that Scripture shows have already unfolded within history. Those signs helped ground my understanding, not in speculation, but in events that can be clearly traced and recognized. As I continued to reflect and study, it became clear to me that Scripture also speaks just as plainly about what has not yet happened. These remaining signs are not meant to stir anxiety or fuel predictions, but to bring balance, patience, and clarity. They remind us that while much has already been fulfilled, there are still key events that must take place before the end comes. The next four signs, numbered six through nine, belong to what is still ahead. Understanding them helps keep our hearts steady, so that we are not shaken by every world event or misled into believing the end is already upon us.
Ten Nations
The sixth sign will be the formation of a ten-nation union or empire arising around the Mediterranean. Scripture consistently points to this future empire, over which the Antichrist will rule. It will be a latter-day Roman Empire, centered around the Mediterranean, with Rome as its capital. This has not yet occurred. However, present movements in the world suggest possible early shifts. The departure of Great Britain from the European Union may mark the beginning of the EU’s decline. Over time, more nations may leave, including Italy and Greece. From among the nations surrounding the Mediterranean, this ten-nation union will eventually arise. From where we are now, this appears to be the next great sign to watch for.
The Antichrist
The seventh sign is the appearance of the Antichrist. Scripture makes clear that in the endtime there will be one particularly evil figure commonly known by this name. He will arise from within the ten-nation confederacy. At first, he will not appear prominent. He is described as a little horn, not one of the ten leading rulers. His identity may not be obvious, and he may seem insignificant in the beginning. Yet, he must arise before the final seven years of this age, because it is he who will sign the coming seven-year pact with Israel, which will mark the end of this age. This means he will already have been present within political circles before the end unfolds.
The Temple Mount Cleared
The eighth sign is the clearing of the Temple Mount. At present, the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock occupy this sacred space. For the third Jewish Temple to be built, the Temple Mount must be cleared. The author’s understanding is that the Temple will be rebuilt on the site currently occupied by the Al Aqsa Mosque. As a result, the mosque must be removed. This should happen in the not-too-distant future. Al Aqsa will be destroyed, likely from above in an unexpected manner, as its removal by land would be nearly impossible due to the intense security surrounding the site.
The Pact
The ninth and final sign will be the signing of the pact between the Antichrist and Israel. This agreement will mark the final seven years of this age, not only for Israel but for the entire world. The pact may involve other nations as well, possibly including Arab nations. When this agreement is signed, it will be a clear indication that the end is truly near. Until then, Scripture reminds us not to be shaken or misled into believing the end has already arrived. All of these signs must occur first.
Rebuilding the Temple
You may wonder why the rebuilding of the Temple itself is not counted among the great signs. It seems the Temple will be rebuilt during the early part of the final seven years. Scripture says that in the middle of those seven years, the Antichrist will stop the sacrifice and oblation. This implies that the pact allows sacrifices to begin. Before sacrifices can take place, however, the altar must be set up, as it was in the days of Ezra. If the pact allows sacrifices and oblations to begin, then the altar must not yet be in place at the time the pact is signed. This, in turn, implies the Temple itself has not yet been built and will be constructed during the opening years of that final period.
My Reflection
As I reflect on these signs that are still to come, I am reminded of the steadiness of God’s timeline. Scripture does not call us to panic. Instead, it invites patience, discernment, and trust. While there may be many smaller indicators along the way, the formation of the ten-nation union stands out as the next major sign. Until that occurs, we are not to be shaken by claims that the end is imminent. When that union comes into existence, and when the Antichrist emerges from its midst, events will likely move swiftly.
For now, these truths encourage me to remain grounded, watchful, and anchored in the Lord. God’s purposes unfold with precision, and every sign comes at its appointed time. Our role is not to predict, but to prepare our hearts, walking faithfully and quietly as we await what is yet to come.
