Deep within man, there is a hunger. Man tries to fill that hunger with outward things—amusements of various kinds, relationships, works, and so forth. But man never is satisfied with these, because only one can fill man—God. Every true Christian has God in Christ within him.
Yet, even though Christians have received the filling of God, there is something more—something we long for, something we yearn for, something more than being filled with God. We Christians are on a journey, and we seek the end of that path.
That end is being one with Christ. We long to see through His eyes, sense His sensations, feel His feelings, think His thoughts. We long to be one with Him—literally, that He and we are one in the deepest and most intimate way.
From this yearning came forth a song.
- What is it You feel, dear Lord?
What is it You know?
What is it You see, O Lord?
Where is it You go?
In all of these things, my Lord,
One thing I desire:
To be one with You, sweet Lord.
To this I aspire:
To be one with You, sweet Lord,
To be one with You.
- In all and in everything,
What I long to win:
The depths of Your heart, my Lord,
What’s hidden within.
In all of these things, my Lord,
One thing I desire:
To be one with You, sweet Lord.
To this I aspire:
To be one with You, sweet Lord,
To be one with You.
- Though bound in this weakness, Lord,
And ‘compassed by death,
I care not for them, dear Lord,
I long for Your breath.
In all of these things, my Lord,
One thing I desire:
To be one with You, sweet Lord.
To this I aspire:
To be one with You, sweet Lord,
To be one with You.
- So breathe Yourself into me.
Fill spirit and heart.
Leave nothing untouched, my Lord,
Pervade ev’ry part.
In all of these things, my Lord,
One thing I desire:
To be one with You, sweet Lord.
To this I aspire:
To be one with You, sweet Lord,
To be one with You.
- And, O, for that day, dear Lord,
When Your face we’ll see,
When Your glory touches us,
When wed we will be…
When shine like the sun we will,
As God’s love o’erflows,
Then sweetness in praise to You
O, dear Love, You’ll know,
Then sweetness in praise to You
O, dear Love, You’ll know!
Verse 1 speaks of the deepest longing of our heart—to know the Lord from within—to see as He sees, to feel as He feels, to go where He goes.
Verse 2 talks of our great Christian quest—not to do some great outward thing, but to win the depths of our precious Lord’s heart.
Verse 3 speaks of our current condition—in a body of death. Yet, even in such a condition, we long for our Christ.
In verse 4 we see that longing fulfilled—to have our inward parts completely saturated and permeated with the wonderful Jesus.
Verse 5 shows us the end of our journey—married to Christ and pouring out our love to Him in the sweetest of praise.
How we long for our dear bridegroom!
