The Lord often uses the most unexpected things to reveal spiritual truths. A conversation, a walk in nature, a song, or even the flight of a bird can suddenly become a window into something eternal.
That is what struck me as I read The Lark Ascending. At first glance, it appears to be a simple account of a man listening to a beautiful piece of classical music by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Yet, what begins as an appreciation of music soon unfolds into something far deeper—a revelation concerning Christ, His ascension, and the destiny of His people.
Birdwatching
The story follows a birdwatcher searching for Skylarks on Vancouver Island. What he witnesses leaves a lasting impression on him. A small brown bird rises almost vertically into the sky, climbing higher and higher while singing continuously. The image is remarkable: a tiny creature ascending heavenward with a song.
Yet what captivated me most was not the bird itself, but what the bird pointed to.
As the man reflects on what he has seen, he suddenly realizes that the Skylark’s ascent is a picture of something much greater. It becomes a picture of Christ ascending to the Father after His resurrection.
The Ascension
Most of us rarely stop to consider the ascension of Christ. We know it happened, but we often move quickly past it. Yet, this booklet invites us to linger there for a moment and consider the beauty, majesty, and significance of that event.
What was it like when the Lord returned to the Father? What joy must have filled heaven as the Son who had suffered, died, and risen again came home in victory? And, if Christ is the Firstborn among many brothers, what does His ascension tell us about those who belong to Him?
These questions form the heart of this booklet.
An Awakening
As I continued reading, I found myself thinking less about the Skylark and more about God’s purpose for His people. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to watch, pray, remain ready, and pursue the Lord wholeheartedly. Yet how often do we live with that expectation?
The booklet presents a stirring picture of believers who have given themselves fully to Christ and are prepared for His coming. It is not written to create fear, but to awaken desire—a desire to know Him more deeply, walk more closely with Him, and be ready whenever He appears.
Perhaps what makes this booklet so compelling is that it reminds us that God’s story is moving toward a glorious conclusion. The sufferings, struggles, and sorrows of this present age are not the end of the story. There is a day coming when Christ will be fully revealed and God’s purpose will reach its fulfilment.
And that day is worth preparing for.
My Reflection
As I reflected on The Lark Ascending, I was reminded that God often speaks through the ordinary to point us toward eternal realities. A bird rising into the heavens became a beautiful reminder of Christ’s ascension and the hope that awaits those who belong to Him.
More than anything, this booklet challenged me to lift my eyes above the distractions of this present age and live with a greater expectation of the Lord’s return. Preparation is not merely about understanding prophecy—it is about knowing Christ, loving Him, and walking with Him day by day until He comes.
