The Covenant
This last group of seven years is sometimes referred to as Daniel’s seventieth week. These final seven years of God's deal-ing with Israel are initiated by a firm covenant between the prince that will come (that is, the Antichrist) and Israel.
These verses in Daniel do not say what this covenant concerns, but it seems it will allow Israel to begin animal sacrifices again on the Temple Mount. In the middle of those final seven years, the Antichrist will break the covenant by causing the offerings at the Temple to cease, and then proceed to desolate Israel.
There may be some kind of great turmoil in the Middle East in which Israel's existence will be threatened. Exactly what will happen, the Bible does not say. However, in the midst of that upheaval, the great leader of the ten-nation European empire will intervene to calm matters and bring about an apparent solution to all the Middle East problems. As mentioned above, he will make a pact with Israel and probably other nations as well.
While it would seem that peace had finally arrived in Israel, from the outset the great European leader (the Antichrist) will be deceiving everyone. The peace he offers, along with the other benefits of the covenant, will all be a charade. As we shall see, in the middle of that last week everything will change.
